UMH is proudly ranked in the 99th percentile nationwide in employee satisfaction as measured by Press Ganey. In previous years, we have earned the Nurse Friendly designation by the Texas Nurses Association (TNA), and we are currently working towards achieving TNA's Pathways to Excellence designation. Uvalde Memorial Hospital has extensive continued education and career ladder opportunities and strongly believes in shared governance for nurses. We have an active staff nurse leadership counsel and each unit has their own unit-based council.

- Jan Morris, RN - Director of Emergency Department
Uvalde Memorial Hospital has a Level IV trauma center. This department is equipped with 8 beds including 2 trauma rooms, an OB/GYN and pediatric room. We have access to 2 helicopters and an on-site helipad. Physician coverage 24/7 and mid-levels Friday thru Monday are staffed. All ED nurses are ACLS and PALS certified. All RNs within the department are TNCC and ENPC certified. UMH averages 1,450 patients per month(2010).

- Hospice
The hospice program serves patients throughout a vast 7 county region who have a life limiting illness. In order to serve such a large population, the staff includes RNs, LVNs, certified nurses’ aides, a Chaplin and social workers. The range of support includes medical, emotional, spiritual and bereavement support. The staff work together to tailor the program to meet the needs of each patient and family.

- Intensive Care Unit

- Shelly Boyd, RN - Director of ICU
Our Intensive Care Unit features 8 intensive care suites and step down beds. The unit is staffed with RNs and cardiac monitor techs. We perform procedures such as arterial lines, and transvenous pacing, as well as cardioversions and TEEs. We have recently purchased new cardiac monitors and telemetry units. Uvalde Memorial Hospital also has an on-staff cardiologist.

- Med-Surg Unit

- Alison Peppler, RN - Med/Surg Director
Med/Surg is an active 34 bed unit. We care for acute medical and surgical patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics. We have 12 telemetry beds. Our staff is made up of RN’s, LVN’s, CNA’s and unit clerks on all shifts. Our staff to patient ratios are 1:5-6 during the days and 1: 6-7 at night. Ratios are adjusted according to patient acuity. New, state of the art Hill-Rom beds equipped with bed scales and bed alarms are one aspect of our cutting edge technology.

- Trudy McPherson, RN - Director of Obstetrics
Our Women’s and Newborns center has 4 labor and deliver rooms, an operating room suite and a triage room. The unit is staffed with RNs in labor and delivery and RNs and LVNs on our 6 bed mother/baby unit. We have an infant security system to ensure the safety of our newborns. The unit provides childbirth classes, hearing screening for all babies, and certified lactation consultants are on staff. We provide certification opportunities for S.T.A.B.L.E. and P.A.L.S. for nurses within the department and require these be completed by the sixth month of employment with UMH.

- Ann Martinez, RN - Director of Surgical Services
Surgical Services provides OR, Day Surgery, GI, PACU and pre-op fast track. The department includes a procedural room, 6 day surgery rooms, and 4 OR suites and recovery bays. A pre-op fast track room also enables us to see patients in advance. UMH provides 24 hour emergency surgical care with on-call teams. All RN’s are ACLS and PALS certified.

- Susan Villasana, LVN - Director of Wound Care Center
Uvalde Memorial Hospital's Wound Care Center is equipped with 4 wound care treatment rooms and 3 monoplace hyperbaric chambers. Staffed with RNs, who are all BLS and ACLS certified, and LVNs we provide wound assessment and care as well as Level IV antibiotic therapy. UMH has 6 TCOM units that make it capable to perform transcutaneous oxygen monitoring studies to test oxygen tissue perfusion.
