Newborn Safety
Working Together To Keep Our Newborns Safe
Infant abductions have become a reality in today's world. In addition to our standard security procedures, it is important that we work together to keep your newborn safe both here in the hospital and when you go home. Here are some suggestions to help us reach this goal:
- Get to know your nurses. Ask to see their picture ID. At the beginning of each shift, the nurse who will be taking care of you and your baby should come into your room and introduce themselves. Before letting anyone touch your baby, make sure that person has a photo ID badge facing forward. If you are uncomfortable about giving your baby to a caregiver, ring the nurses' station for assistance.
- Don't give out personal information. Do not give out information about you or your baby in person or over the phone unless you know the person asking questions. Dishonest people could use this information to gain access to your baby here or at home.
- Make sure your baby travels in the bassinet. Nursing staff use a bassinet to transport babies and if you see someone carrying a baby, please notify the nurses' station.
- Code alert system. Each baby has a code alert system on their ankle which is activated from the nursery. Please do not try to remove or adjust the system as it will alarm if tampered with. The windows in your room must remain closed at all times as they are monitored by a security system.
